From Our Customers

Technical Knowledge

Keeping up-to-date on today's engine technology.

At Simply Repaired, we desire to provide our customers with the technical knowledge needed to service today's small engine technology. Along with his hands-on experience in the shop, Zach has completed the work required to become a Certified Technician with EETC and a Master Service Technician with Briggs & Stratton.

Parts Inventory

Keeping parts to keep you running on time.

At Simply Repaired, we recognize the value of your time. Our goal is to complete any repairs or service work as quickly as possible. To help us meet this goal, we maintain a selective inventory of common repair/service parts. Some of our inventory includes: air filters, oil filters, fuel filters, carburetor kits, fuel line, spark plugs, solenoids, starters, ignition coils, gaskets, chainsaw chain, and starter rope. Feel free to contact us with any questions!

**Currently, our inventory is focused on outdoor power equipment. We do not carry an inventory for powersports equipment, so most powersports parts will be ordered as needed.

Who We Are

Having grown up on a farm, my small engine experience began with old mowers, abandoned motorcycles, and a few basic tools. After tearing into the few things I could get my hands on, I had the opportunity in 2006 to begin working at my uncle's lawn equipment shop in Atlantic, IA. After graduating high school, I began taking courses at Iowa State University for a career in engineering. For the first three years of college, I came back each summer to work with my uncle (I often tell people that the most important things I know as an engineer are the things I learned working in the shop).

Today, I live in Marshalltown with Rachel (my wife) and our four children. I work as a product engineer at Emerson (Fisher), but have never stopped working on small engines and other outdoor power equipment. Whether for friends or family, there have always been opportunities to keep busy with a wrench. Now, I am looking forward to working with more people in the Marshalltown community.

- Zach Hamilton (Owner + Mechanic)

As Zach’s wife, I have always enjoyed being present in what he is doing, so I am glad to help him now by asnwering calls and scheduling repair work. When I’m not helping with Simply Repaired, you can find me at home or around town with our four children, busy homeschooling, running errands, or simply enjoying time outdoors.

Give us a call. I look forward to speaking with you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us directly if you cannot find an answer to your question.

This is a side business for us. Zach's full time job is as a product engineer for Emerson (Fisher). Because of this, the mower repair work usually happens in the evenings and on the weekends. With four kids at home, there are plenty of other activities that also happen during these times. Setting fixed hours would limit our ability to be present with our children when we need to be. The loose hours means that we can control what our schedule looks like, ensuring that both the business and our family can thrive. We will do our best to make our schedule aligns with your needs.

A correct diagnosis saves our customer's a significant amount of money. No wasted parts and no unnecesary repairs means more money in your pocket. Generally, we will charge a minimum of 1/2 hour to cover diagnostic time. If the issue is more advanced and requires additional diagnostics time, that will be accounted for in the final invoice. Even if you choose to complete the repair yourself, you will still be expected to pay for our time and experience in helping you identify the correct solution.

Yes, we schedule everything we work on. Since we work out of the garage behind our house, parking and storage are limited. Out of respect for our neighbors, we want to limit the amount of equipment parked in our driveway. To do this, we have to limit the amount of equipment we have at any given time.

Scheduling also helps us limit any conflicts between our family schedule and our customer expectations. You can be confident that if you schedule a time for us to work on your equipment, we will keep our commitment and work on it right away.

You can call, text, or email us to schedule an equipment service or repair.

The cost to repair depends on a number of different factors. In some cases the issue might be obvious and we can give a rough estimate over the phone. However, most issues will require that we look at your piece of equipment before providing an estimate.

Our phone number (Ames area code) and address (residential) seem to confuse some people. This is understandable. To be clear, we ARE located in Marshalltown in a residential area in the Northwest corner of town. We work out of the garage behind our house. There is a small alley that wraps around back. We are in the blue garage with the "Simply Repaired" sign above the garage door.

We offer free pickup and delivery within the Marshalltown city limits. This applies to riding mowers, push mowers, snow blowers, and other power equipment of similar size. Our trailer can fit mowers with up to a 60-inch deck.

For equipment located outside the city limits, we charge a flat rate per mile (see our home page for the current dollar amount). The calculated value will be based on the travel distance one way. For example, if you are located ten(10) miles outside of Marshalltown, the cost for pickup and delivery (combined) will be ten(10) multiplied by the current rate. If the current rate is $3.50, the cost to pickup and deliver your equipment would be $35.00.

We will work on almost any brand of equipment. Feel free to reach out if you have any doubts.

No, we do not currently sell power equipment. We tried buying and selling a few pieces of equipment, but was more of a challenge than it was worth. Fixing and maintaining equipment is our sweet spot, so that is where we focus our time.

We are currently setup with multiple OEM and aftermarket distributors. As much as possible, we source our parts from these distributors. This helps to ensure competitive pricing and quality components. When needed, we will use other online retailers to locate and procure parts.

No, not usually. There are some cases where the issue is simple enough to repair on site, but usually we need the equipment in our shop where all of our diagnostic tools are located.

We will work on some ATVs and motorcylces, especially older equipment. Zach grew up on old Honda motorcycles and Kawasaki Bayous. However, our experience with powersports equipment (ATVs, UTVs, motrocycles, etc.) is very limited compared to our experience with outdoor power equipment (mowers, snow blowers, chainsaws, etc.). If you are interested in us looking at something, feel free to reach out to us. We will let you know if the repair is within our skill level.

No, we are not currently setup to work on outboard boat motors.

We accept cash, check, or cards. Although we are happy any way we get paid, check and card are preferred, since it is difficult to keep change with us wherever we go. For card payments, we have a card reader, but can also send you a digital invoice with an online payment link.

On larger invoice amounts, checks or cash are preferred, since our card processing fees are a flat percentage. On larger invoices, we can lose a significant amount just on processing fees.
